Dame Judi Dench is ‘okay’ with the idea of a female James Bond but thinks it would start a new series
Dame Judi Dench thinks it’s “good” to have a female James Bond, but wondered if it would still be part of the franchise.
The 87-year-old actress – who has played M in eight films in the series – isn’t sure if it would be fair to still credit the films to writer Ian Fleming because if there was a female lead it wouldn’t would be more faithful to his novels.
Discussing the possibility, she said: ‘As it is, that’s fine, but then should you call it, ‘By Ian Fleming’? Who knows.”
Judi insisted she would never have wanted to play Bond herself.
She exclaimed, “Certainly not! I don’t have the energy to do all that jumping off roofs and on motorcycles.
The last two films in the series, ‘Spectre’ and ‘No Time To Die’, saw Ralph Fiennes as the new M and Judi insisted she didn’t mind seeing someone else in the role because it was “high time” for her. to pass it on.
When asked her reaction to seeing Ralph as M, Judi – whose eyesight is failing due to macular degeneration – joked, “Well, I can’t see much. But I don’t mind hearing someone else in the role.
“They said I cried when I stopped being M – I didn’t. I had done it eight times; it was high time someone else got on it …
“I’m awfully loving all that time spent doing Bond.”
The veteran actress made four films with Pierce Brosnan and four with Daniel Craig, but refused to choose her favorite Bond.
She told Saga magazine: “I couldn’t tell! Pierce is a handsome man – Irish, of course – and Daniel is a lot of fun.
“Both have great qualities – that’s why they’re Bond.”
The ‘Belfast’ actress is now gearing up for her role in ‘Hallelujah!’, an adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play about a geriatric ward, and she can’t wait to get started.
She said: “Derek Jacobi is in and Jennifer Saunders – it will be fun”.
