Funimation will launch the first dubbed episode on Wednesday.
The anime started airing on Fuji TVthe FOD service in Japan on September 15 and abroad via Funimation and bilibili. The anime will also air on Fuji TV‘s + Ultra programming block in January 2022.
Furukawa’s novel makes classic Japanese epic The tale of the Heike in modern language, and the anime is the first animated television adaptation of the novel. The original epic tells the story of the rise and fall of the Taira clan during the Genpei War. The anime centers around the perspective of Biwa, a traveling blind minstrel. Biwa meets Taira no Shigemori, heir to her clan, and bearer of a supernatural vision that can perceive ghosts. She then proclaims to him a prophecy of the fall of her clan.
Naoko Yamada, seasoned director on several Kyoto animation works, directs the anime as his first directorial job after leaving Kyoto animation, with frequent collaborators Reiko Yoshida as a screenwriter and kensuke ushio as a music composer. Fumiko Takano drafts the original character concepts, while Takashi Kojima (Rocker valves, Surf your wave) adapts these character designs for animation. Tomotaka kubo (Deho Gallery) is in charge of artistic direction, and Ken hashimoto is the key artist of color. Shotaro Imai is the intermediate animation director. Kazuto Izumita is the director of compositing of photography, while Kiyoshi Hirose is editing. Eriko Kimura is the audio director with Hiromune Kurahashi (Otonarium) in charge of sound effects. Yoshihiko Sata is credited for historical oversight, and biwa player Yukihiro Gotō is credited with overseeing the performance of the game of biwa.
The alternative rock band hitsujibungaku performs the opening theme song “Hikaru Toki” (When the Light Shines), while a graph feat. ANI (Scha Dara Parr) performs the ending theme song “Unified Perspective”.
Yamada, Yoshida and ushio have already worked together in A silent voice and Liz and the blue bird animated films at Kyoto animation. Yamada and Yoshida in particular were longtime collaborators before these films at Kyoto animation, working on cartoons such as K-ON!, Tamako market, and Tamako love story.
