Horror Fans Try to Create a List of the Best Genre-Defining Movies

A24
Horror is something of a success story in the world of genre fiction; what was once seen as nothing more than heaps of pornography of shock and torture value, is now recognized today as a tool for poignant social commentary, storytelling and a masterful exploitation of our collective fears.
For such a large and versatile genre, while continuing to reach new heights, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where the building blocks all land in horror history. But Reddit has never been one to shy away from a challenge, and one r/horror user has taken the liberty of creating the 35 most important horror movies that have ever existed.
Choosing to order the selections based on the year the movies were released, the user started the list with 1920 The Office of Dr. Caligarione of two silent films on the list alongside Nosferatus. Considered a cornerstone of German Expressionist cinema, the film follows a crazed hypnotist who commits murder by placing someone under his spell to kill for them.
To complete a list that included people like Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween it was in 2018 Hereditaryconsidered the cornerstone of 21st century horror.
As is the case on the Internet, of course, some respondents questioned the absence of films such as Friday 13, It follows, Pet semataryand Insidious.
Another respondent pointed to the seemingly glaring absence of David Cronenberg Flya 1986 film that played an important role in bringing the body horror subgenre to light.
It’s fair to say that no one could have predicted the horror genre’s trajectory even a decade ago, just as we probably can’t predict where it will be a decade from now. Though we’re all too happy to step out on a (cut) branch and say the future is blindingly bright for the horror world.
